FOUR OF THE PEOPLE'S BANKS.

- page 44 -

WHERE there is thrift you find "the people's banks"—building associations. There are four in Norwood. The Norwood is the pioneer, and its organization dates back to November 14, 1882. For years Col. P. P. Lane was its president, but the present roster of officers is as follows: President, J. C. Masker; Vice-President, W. M. Langdon; Treasurer, Edward Mills, Secretary, W. S. Johns; Assistant Secretary, F. C. Hock; Directors, H. W. Kahle, John L. Vine, J. H. Brachmann, A. N. Siebern, J. F. Metz, and T. H. Ringgold.
The Norwood Improved was the second building and loan company to invade the growing field, and it bought push and enterprise with it. Chas. E. Page is President; D. G. Zoller, Vice-President; F. A. Zimmerman, Secretary; A. P. Hagemeyer, Treasurer; Directors, Walter Carey, L. E. Van Ausdol, Hugo E. Knauft, A. R. Hollis, Theodore Trimble, T. J. McFarlan and W. G. Williams. Semi-annual dividends are paid and weekly meetings held at the Hopkins Avenue depot, a structure by the way that was built and is owned by residents of South Norwood.
The Elsmere Building and Loan Company was incorporated in July, 1890, by E. J. Morten, H. P. Hathaway, W. F. Collins, Geo. F. Cook, Edwin McMillen, A. W. Eastman, A. A. Brown, Wm. Kerentz, Wm. Thorburn, H. Ensign and A. Malleboe. The officers are David Davis, President; F. G. Leiman, Vice-President; E. J. Morten, Treasurer; Ferd Fromlet, Secretary; G. A. Willard and H. P. Hathaway, Finance Committee.
The West Norwood Building and Loan Association is officered by Dr. J. J. Winn, President; Chas. H. Weisenfelder, Vice-President; Peter J. Schneider, Secretary; L. H. Gebhart, Assistant Secretary; Gustav Schmidt, Treasurer, and Benj. Overmohl, Fred Schmidt, Wm. Jannings, Oliver Devoe, Joseph Espel, John Rolsen, H. Jostwert, H. Rikhoff, and Fred Dankel, Jr., members of the boards.
In the development of Norwood these Associations have played no small part.
